How WINDWOODS are made:Throughout our wood crafting and artisan painting we employ the latest production technologies and the highest quality materials obtainable. 1.Materials:We work only with weather-loving, kiln-dried western red cedar which is very different from the pine typically used in early colonial times. Our cedar is custom milled to a full one inch thickness. It is rough sawn to give realistic textures (like cow and pig hides) and dept to hand painted colors and antique glazes. The finished ornament is very different from the ordinary flat, metal stamped varieties that are devoid of any color except the look-a-like brass or copper tones. We say “Vive la difference!”
2.Composing the sculpture:We start by cutting to shape and then bonding the pieces of cedar boards essential to the design. The resulting ornament will have two to four inches of depth. Not so with metal stamped designs. Each layer of cedar is bonded under pressure with exterior industrial strength urethane glue. The resulting lamination is much like today’s construction beams and trusses that have great strength and durability combined with the appealing look and warmth of natural wood.
3.Ornament detailing:The ornament body and when marked related parts are then hand-routed for curvatures, followed by disc sandings and hand tooling to enhance the design.
4. Locating the wind turning point:This is very critical. Each completed ornament is studied for its optimum wind turning balance point. When it’s marked it is deep drilled to receive a pivot bearing and the brass tube that houses the weathervane assembly rod.
5. Paintings:The complete ornament is prime paint coated followed by hand paintings, antique glazing and a clear finish coat to assure long-lasting protection against the elements.
6. The final touch:To show pride in our work -- and authenticity -- we sign and date each ornament. We know of no other weathervanes that have this feature.
